Early spring heralds

21./22., 27.3. + 5.4.2023
These photographs were taken in and around Guarda, my beloved little village in Lower Engiadina, Switzerland. Surrounded by beautiful mountains and nature Guarda sure is an outstanding little village! All images are copyrighted by ReBaFoto, Reto Battaglia. It is quite unusual here that the calendar spring and spring in nature arrive at the same time.

After a "lousy" winter - far too little snow - the first signs of spring are appearing. Actually, it's too early for that up here. The winter was pretty normal temperature-wise, mostly cold, but we missed the snow a lot.

The lack of snow also kept me from taking pictures during the last three months. But now the tentative signs of spring lured me to take the camera along once again.

At night it was still quite cold but for a few days the temperatures did not drop below freezing. Therefore, it will now probably go quickly with the arrival of spring. On the other hand, the meteorologists say that the temperatures will fall again deep below the freezing point at night already at the beginning of next week. Snowfalls are also announced again. So it could be that the winter once again makes an advance.

Due to the infrequent precipitation and the lack of snow, a shortage of water is slowly but surely making itself felt. For the first time since I have been living here, we have had to reduce the amount of water flowing through our village wells. In northern Italy the drought is even more extreme. They already had acute water shortages last year. In northern Italy's Lake Garda (not to be confused with Guarda, of course), you can now reach an island on foot!

Not exactly Spring!

Update 27.3.2023

The meteorologists were right: Both the cold and the snow "celebrate" a comeback today! The following two snapshots I took right outside my front door.

Still not spring...

Update 5.4..2023

Ten days later temperatures are still below the long term average. The snow has melted but spring has not progressed so far.

Ten days later... snowfall again.

Update 14.4.2023

But I'm not complaining in any way, because the water is more than necessary. So I am even grateful for it! To reach the normal water levels in lakes, rivers and groundwater it would have to snow or rain for days. I only hope that the precipitation will fall gently, without storms and floods.
